Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is a 1-5 rating based on a hurricane's present intensity. It is used to give an estimate of the potential property damage and flooding expected along a coast from a hurricane's landfall.

Category 1:
- Winds: 74-95 mph
- Storm surge: 4-5 feet
- Minimal damage.
Category 2:
- Winds: 96-110 mph
- Storm surge: 6-8 feet
- Wind can cause damage, but flooding is usually the major concern.
Category 3:
- Winds: 111-130 mph
- Storm surge: 9-12 feet
- These storms cause serious wind damage and severe coastal flooding.
Category 4:
- Winds: 131-155 mph
- Storm surge: 13-18 feet
- The winds damage even the most sturdy structures, and the 18-foot storm surge can flood low-lying areas several miles inland.
Category 5:
- Winds: greater than 155 mph
- Storm surge: greater than 18 feet
- Since 1925, only three have hit the U.S: Camille in 1969, Andrew in 1992 and Wilma in 2005.
