Organizers set off postponed fireworks

Revelers enjoyed Fourth of July fireworks a day late after dangerous rainstorms forced many displays to be rescheduled.

The State Fairgrounds fireworks show commenced about a half-hour earlier than planned Saturday night to beat lightning that was expected to affect the area. The show was originally scheduled for Friday night.

Fireworks scheduled at Regency Park in Cary were also postponed to Saturday. They were held in conjunction with the North Carolina Symphony’s performance.

A fireworks show Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park got rained out, although actor-musician Kevin Costner and his band, Modern West, managed to take the stage before a severe thunderstorm knocked out power to the ballpark.

The fireworks show has been rescheduled for Monday, July 7, after a game against the Norfolk Tides.

Anyone with a ticket stub from the Independence Day Celebration can redeem it at the box office for a ticket to Monday's events. Those without a July Fourth ticket will be able to enter the ballpark after the seventh inning to see the fireworks.

“I guess Crash Davis can still get us a rain-out,” Durham Bulls General Manager Mike Birling joked. “But now anyone who bought a ticket got to see a concert, a Bulls game and the fireworks show, and we’re able to provide a special night for the fans already planning to attend Monday’s game.”

Chapel Hill's Independence Day celebration and fireworks went off as planned Friday night, despite the rain.
