Former UNC Star Joseph Forte Arrested In Maryland

Maryland State Police arrested a man who said he was a guard for the Seattle Supersonics after finding marijuana and a handgun in his car Thursday.

Joseph Forte, 22, of Rockville, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a handgun. Forte was arrested after troopers smelled burning marijuana in his car after he was stopped for speeding along Interstate 95.

Police said Trooper Christopher Corea clocked Forte going 90 mph in a 65 mph zone near mile marker 79 in Harford County. During the search of the vehicle, several small plastic containers or bags of marijuana were found and a .22 caliber handgun was discovered under the rear seat.

Forte attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville and the University of North Carolina before being drafted by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2001 draft. Forte played for the Supersonics last year in 17 games and averaged 1.4 points per game.

The Seattle SuperSonics had no comment Friday on Forte's arrest. Coach Nate McMillan and other team officials were out of town.
