Bill Leslie

"People are always asking me where to take vacation. What’s a cool place? What’s the most scenic drive?"

WRAL News Anchor Bill Leslie attempts to answer those questions and others in his Carolina Conversations blog.

North Carolina's favorite mayonnaise

The debate flared again on WRAL’s Morning News. Lynda Loveland, Valonda Calloway and Mike Maze vehemently attacked my choice for mayonnaise on a tomato sandwich saying Kraft’s Miracle Whip “is the only way to go.” This discussion triggered a rash of emails with strong opinions.

So, it is time to settle the issue once and for all – What is North Carolina’s favorite mayonnaise? Click here to vote!

We will keep the voting open through Monday. Let your friends know about our survey. Get them to vote and comment. On Tuesday we will declare a winner. We will send the results to the NC General Assembly and begin lobbying efforts to make the winner “North Carolina’s Official Mayonnaise.” Fair enough?

I have come up with six brands which will be listed in alphabetical order. Feel free

Pet Peeve of the Day

What is your pet peeve today? Go ahead. Get it off your chest. We gather here for group therapy every day.

Here’s my pet peeve: people who refuse or forget to turn on their headlights in the rain. Maybe it’s laziness but whatever it is it could turn out to be downright deadly! Sunday, while driving back to the Raleigh area from Grandfather Mountain I encountered several intense thunderstorms and several drivers in front and back of me chose not to activate their headlights. I could barely see them. Here’s what the law says:

“Rain reduces visibility and makes pavement dangerous. You may be able to see only a few feet ahead; therefore you should drive more slowly than usual and you MUST use your headlights and windshield wipers!”

Folks, that’s the law! Feel free to give your opinion on this peeve or post another one.

Make Mike Laugh Winner

Thanks to all of you who participated in the Make Mike Maze Laugh Contest. Mike enjoyed reading all of the entries. Chuckles were raining like cats and dogs in the WRAL Weather Center. It's never easy to pick a favorite but Mike said wheelman made him laugh the most. Here was the joke:

Late one night a drunk leaves the neighborhood bar and decides to take a shortcut home through the cemetery. There's no moon out so it is very difficult to see and as he is stumbling his way along he trips and falls into a freshly dug grave. A few minutes later another drunk leaves the same bar and decides to take a shortcut through the cemetery as well. He's stumbling along as well when he hears someone yelling "Help me! I'm cold!". He follows the sound until he gets to the open grave where the first drunk is still yelling "Help me! I'm cold!". He looks around, and then answers back "Well, of course you are! You've done kicked all of your dirt off!".

Weekend Whirlwind

It was a weekend whirlwind. As soon as I got off the air Friday I zipped up to Linville for the 53rd annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. I emceed the games with James K. Flynn out of Charlotte. During the games I stay with my sister Stephanie and her husband John Scott. They have a home in Blowing Rock. Friday night we went to a fund raising and informational event for the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center where we learned about the alarming rise of melanoma across North Carolina. It was a sobering reminder to avoid the dangerous rays of the sun especially between 10:00A.M. and 2:00P.M. and to always lather up with sun screen.

Early Saturday morning I made the wonderfully peaceful 30 minute drive from Blowing Rock to Grandfather Mountain via the Blue Ridge Parkway. That gorgeous stretch of blacktop takes you by Moses Cone Manor and Julian Price Park with one of the most inviting little lakes in North Carolina.

Make Mike Maze Laugh!

One of the many endearing qualities of WRAL Meteorologist Mike Maze is his ability to laugh and not take himself too seriously. Mike is one of the hardest workers I've known and a superb meteorologist but he's never too engrossed to pass up a light hearted moment. Occasionally Mike “gets the giggles” on air. He did so this morning when talking about the downpour in Lizard Lick last night. I must confess there are some of us who enjoy egging Mike on. Today I invite you to egg him on.

The person with the best story or joke to make Mike Maze laugh will win a CD or DVD of their choice from my growing collection. Keep it clean but make it funny! Make Mike Maze laugh!
