Do Squirrels Make Good Pets?

Dear Miss Fifi:

Do squirrels make good pets?

- Maggie

~~~
Dear Maggie:
Eww. Miss Fifi is not a big fan of the varmits, but my faithful feline assistant, Dilettante Dilly, said she'd be happy to have a squirrel for dinner—err, I meant to say she'd be happy to have a squirrel for a pet.
But this question piqued my interest, so I had ol' Dilly do a little research. Squirrels.org notes: "They make poor house pets since their sharp claws, and teeth can do a great deal of damage. They can even harm a human unintentionally ...  Most Cities, Counties and States have rules about keeping wild animals as pets. A permit is often required. It would be best to inquire before you try to adopt a disabled squirrel."
Even raising a squirrel from infancy, it most likely will never be completely tame! Mine was not destructive, but as soon as he was old enough he was released into the wild where he could be happy, and I found him when he was less than 10 days old. Keeping him would have been hard for him!
