about geocachers of the triangle

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

This is a place where cachers can come to discuss interesting caches in the Triangle and also a place where those interested in caching can come and talk to people who enjoy this wonderful hobby.  For those of you who don't know what geocaching is, we use GPS units to locate hidden containers around the world. Think of it like a world wide scavenger hunt without a list. For more info go to www.geocaching.com.

The most challenging one I ever hunted was one just off highway 98 at the extreme east end of Falls lake. You had to navigate a swamp a huge beaver dam and every critter known to Wake County. My 10 year old daughter was with me and she was very brave wading through knee deep water full of snakes. Finally did find it though. Might have to get back into this. I haven't done it in years.

Well, as we like to say in the sport, we use multi million dollar sattelites to find tupperware in the woods! It sounds like your excercises in navigation is very similar to geocaching (there are multi caches that send you around to multiple places to find coordinates to your next destination to ultimately find the final). www.geocaching.com has the full regs on the sport along with helpful hints on how to get started.

While serving in the army years ago, we used to setup land navigation courses that required true skill in dead reckoning. We would tack up envelopes onto trees or stash them behind rocks, with partial topo maps inside (topos cut into pieces). As you navigated your way thru, you'ld get a larger piece of the puzzle map and eventually make it to the rall point. There were spoof maps and/or instructions as well to lead you astray if you weren't watching what you were doing.

Bringing a GPS into it brings a new dimension. Hadn't gotten into geocaching, due to time, but am quite interested in learning more. Do tell!

Interesting. Can't wait to see how your group develops! -Angela
