I just wanted to extend a big welcome to all the new members and a thank you to all of you who have contributed your pet peeves. They are all so true and obnoxious!
In case anyone wants to create a blog, I've made you all editors!! Share the pain. :-)
I am going to start posting blogs on occasion that have helpful grammar tips or explain difficult constructions or rules. Anybody is welcome to do the same.
about i judge poor grammar
Plainly and simply, this group is for those of us who judge others when they use poor grammar. It happens a lot on GOLO!
We can excuse the occasional typo or even the misspelling of difficult words, but consistently poor grammar is unacceptable to us! Subject-verb agreement is just proper etiquette. Punctuation is not against the law! Don't know the difference between adjectives and adverbs? You don't belong!
This is all in good fun of course. :-)

i.e. vs. e.g.
Lie vs. Lay
Then vs. Than
"Would of" instead of "Would have"

The one I remember most is that you are not to use "snuck." You must use "sneaked" instead. Snuck is considered colloquial. I would think busted would be too!

I see why some of these people make you insane. I hope you make allowances for foreigners.
One confession: I occasionally mess up on "its" and "it's," and every time I do it, I hear my 11th grade English teacher's voice explaining the rules of when to apostrophize (no, its not a real word). One more confession: I hate it when people verbalize a noun by adding -ize to the end of the word.
