i would like to join your club. I am in the process of applying for grants in hope to start up a home business (I have to start somewhere) in the eco-friendly field.

chickenlittle - I also just did a blog post about chickens! We live in the City of Raleigh and have a flock of 7 hens. We LOVE our girls! You can't beat fresh eggs. We get a little over 3 dozen eggs per week, so our friends and neighbors also benefit from our feathery friends. I do wish Cary would follow Raleigh's suit of allowing well-cared for hens - I totally agree with you!

Kidw4legs: I recently did a blog post on harvesting rainwater and included some links - check out the Shades of Green blog on the blog page. I'd suggest just using some heavy-duty window screen - it should do the trick. You will want to create an overflow an inch or two below the top of your vessel with a 1 to 2 inch PVC piping. The pieces (one elbow and connector) are cheaply found at a home improvement store. Does your collection vessel have a lid? You can drill a series of holes in the lid with a 1-2 inch hole drill bit and screw a large piece of screen over it. I'd suggest making a series of small holes rather than large holes because any debris that collects above the screen will give it weight, especially when wet, and could damage the screen. But by drilling the holes about an inch or two apart, you can maximize the collection while also giving some protection to the screen. We've used basic window screen sold in rolls at HD or Lowes. I hope this makes sense! Good luck

How do I become a member of this group? I think I have some great experience that I would love to be able to share with the group.

Thanks, and have a great day!

If you use a dishwasher in your home, and run it daily, you can be a little more green if you turn off the "heat dry" that would normally run after all the washing cycles were complete. This is nothing but a heating element like the ones used in your oven. Letting the dishes air dry every day will lower your electric bill noticeably. You might have to towel-dry a few cups, but it's worth it!

I want a rain barrel, and would like to make my own since I can easily come up with a suitable container.

I need advice for designing/making the top, so that the water is filtered and mosquito problems are minimized.

We do NOT have gutters, so I need the "European" style rain barrel, where the majority of the top is open to collect water. I do have a nice place where our roof lines meet, to situate the collection vessel.

I'm needing ideas for how to construct/modify a plastic top and install screen or whatever, to keep trash out.

I have had NO luck finding plans for the European style barrel on the Web, and in fact, not a lot for making your own rain barrel anyway! I guess the money is in making them for now, and the secrets are being guarded.

Any help would be appreciated!

I recently bought a house in Cary. The first few "improvements" I made were installing rain barrels on the gutter down spouts and creating a 16'x16' vegetable garden.

I'm also in the process of convincing the town council to overturn the ban on hens. This is not going to be easy given that I'm in Cary, but I've already got 1 council member willing to sponsor it. There are many beneficial reasons to keep hens. Fresh eggs that are healthier than store bought, free fertilizer and tilling (scratching).

Hens are quieter and cleaner than most dogs. As with any pet, the cleanliness of the animal is controlled by the nature of the owner. A negligent dog owner will have messy dogs. Roosters are loud and aggressive, but best of all, they are not needed for hens to lay eggs.

If anyone else is in Cary, can you contact your council members and let them know you are interested in keeping hens.

Nice job Angie. My wife and I have done similar things at our house. We have completely eliminated using paper towels, paper plates, and napkins. Now everything is reusuable. Along with our usual recyling bin, we have noticed the amount of trash we send to the landfill is reduced by atleast half.

These are easy and cheap things to do. Its mainly about making people aware of taking these steps.

I don't know if I'm considered a "tree-hugger" but I am trying to conserve energy and save our planet. I just started a new job in February and before I got here, no one recycled anything but office paper. I ordered a recycling bin and now everyone is recycling drink bottles & cans and a few other things..........now if I could just get them to quit using styrofoam cups, plastic utensils and paper plates! I brought in a dish towel from home as well as bought some reusable cloths to wash my plate, cups and utensils that I brought in. What is it with people? I don't understand the logic of using a "new" cup everyday (or in some cases, multiple times a day!). We even have a dishwasher here, that if used even daily, would help the landfill situation, but no one uses real plates & cups to fill up the dishwasher.

elamska: I have a regular old pump from Lowes Home Improvement to move water from my 300 gallon tank to my garden. The pump cost around $80 and does a wonderful job! I attach to to the tank with a small (about 2.5 foot) hose, then run my standard sprinkler or the sprinkler heads installed in my garden quickly and easily. I don't notice any difference in pressure. It would also be sufficient for watering my yard as I have no problem running a full-sized sprinkler with the pump.

I've also discovered the joys of hand watering with my 2 gallon, galvanized watering can, This is great for my blueberry and blackberry bushes, but wouldn't really feasible for my yard (although we don't water our yard - it's all weedy anyway). I found this watering can at Wal-mart for around $12 and it's done well so far.
