are you looking at household budget cuts?

Published Oct. 10, 2008

Lately, I've been looking at where I can cut back at on my monthly expenses. The price of gasoline has been regularily leaving me short-changed by the end of the week. I have to deposit a certain amount from my paycheck into my checking account every week just to pay bills. What's left has been divided into spending money and savings. But what I was putting into savings in the past is now going into my gas tank. So I am now unable to save any money that's accessible. I still contribute into my 401K, and I say that in hopes it doesn't go bye-bye with the stock market's downfall.

So now, what have I considered doing away with to lower my monthly living expenses? I may very well decide tomorrow to go to Time Warner Cable's office and discontinue my digital cable service and go back to basic cable. That new HDTV I recently bought as a self-given house-warming gift to myself may have to loose it's high definition signal for now, along with some of those channels I never watch. That should save me a mere $25/mo.

Another way I've tried to save money is to turn off the lights in a room when I walk out of it. Last month my electric bill was $44. I also  take short showers and conserve as much water as I can. My water bill last month was only $16. My phone service is limited to one phone...my cell phone. I did away with a landline years ago.  So utilities are well groomed, especially if I reduce my Time Warner bill.

Now where else can I save to offset this vicious economy? Any suggestions? Are you, or have you, made any changes in your spending habits? Please share.

Christmas shopping is going to be a real bust for many stores this year. It may even put some out of business. I personally think it would be good to trim some of demand for these foreign products that have robbed many of us of our jobs. Please do your best to give American-made products this year. Even if it's just a roll of postage stamps. Doing so will help me as well as yourself.

There's no telling how much money companies have gotten for free by people buying gift cards from them, giving them as a Christmas gift, and they never get used. Or almost just as bad, the receiver gets the card, goes to the store to use it, and after their purchase they have a few cents or even a ver dollars left on it. The stores never give that change back out. So what happens is the gift card holder never finishes up using the card you gave them. That's free money to the store...pure profit. To prevent this from happening, and still make shopping easy...give a gift card from a grocery store they shop at, or a prepaid gas card from a gas station you know they visit frequently. Doing so will assure they use all the money you intended for them to get from you.

This Christmas, I plan on spending my money wisely. Not just to help myself, but for the receipients too. Those "Forever Stamps" are good for as long as you have them, although the price of them may go up in the future. A roll of 100 of these stamps cost $42.00, if I'm correct they're currently 42 cents each. They'd make a great gift and would be very easy and economical to wrap up.

Keeping your FICO score on your credit report as high as possible will yield you a lower interest rate on just about everything you buy on credit, especially credit cards and mortgage loans. Did you know that when you apply for credit, that that "hit" on your credit report will lower your score 3~5 points for each hit? Another words, before you fill out a credit application at the car dealership(s), or whatever you are seeking financing on, have your mind made up that you WILL make that purchase if approved. Many places often encourage you right off the bat to apply for the credit, regardless of how much effort they've applied to get you to buy their product. It's a sale's tactic. Don't do it unless you're sure you are ready to buy.

When you get your credit card bill, or any bill that has an interest charge added to it...make that payment as soon as you can. Most companies determine your interest amount by calculating an "average daily balance" for the number of days in the billing cycle. You'll save money by making that payment the day you get the bill, instead of waiting the few days you have till it's due.

maybe I need to drag them all and post them online and see what happens........I might get lucky.

amy-have a friend that sells books cheap on e bay. makes bundles on shipping and handling!

As for cell phones, I've stayed with the same company and recently rearranged the plan and came away with more minutes and features for less money. Also, we have taken all the features from our home phone and have it down to just a base rate so that it can be used for local calls incoming and 911. We use cellular for everything else. Not giving up the internet, have kids that have to do research and I like my GOLO...and myspace. Keeping the cable too. Dont watch it much but the hubby and kids do. I spend way too much money on....books....and now have a bunch of books. Maybe I should put them on ebay! That's a way to make money, too. Sell on ebay.

ok...let's see if i can come up with a few more. fluorescent bulbs-bright white. hot water heater-timer and insulated cover. crock pot soup and other meals. cell phone-pay as you go-trac phone-use only for emergencies. don't buy ANYTHING if it is not on sale. craigslist always has free or cheap freezers, fireplace tools, and so much more. freecycle is another good site. you need to spend time on there on both sites because you have to jump when you see something you want. unbelievable what people get rid of!! food saver system-keeps food fresh and makes space in freezer. if need be use 2 liter bottles of water in freezer to keep it cold. takes more if not full. i saw a program on opera where there were people that push as hard to save money. you can also go to her site for info on a lady that has a system for reducing food bills. there is also someone that saved in other ways. home owners-insurance the house only-you're not replacing land. running out of room! LOL :)

Ugh, I just looked at one. I think I'll unplug now. Thanks for the great blog, good night.

Yell at me if I get back on tonight, I really am addicted. ;)
