Dreams and Hard Work
As I remember there was little sleep for me that night. I lay awake with movies of those days gone by. Lucky, Lukey and me and of course there was Margaret for a little while. Those days in the branch and the times the three of us had. I wanted them again. The two funerals had zapped the pure life outta me. Then the breath came to me like a wind from heaven filling me with pure air like I had when we ran through the woods. Being with her made those days real and today a fantasy.
I wanted so to have the boys back and put together some of the most outrageous pranks we had ever devised. It hurt to realize that it would never be. Both of them lost to the same cause. These two along with 38,503 others lost in a war that wasn’t won. I should have been there with them. I did get examined for the army and thought surely I was on my way to join them. The examiners found that there was some little “thing” wrong with my ears and classified me 4-F. I was called to examination two other times and the same thing happened. I never knew there was anything wrong at all. It had to do with a high frequency ringing in my ears. Never noticed it until the government found it. What difference did a hearing problem make if I was going to fight and most probably die for my country? I needed to go and now I couldn’t get it off my mind that I should have been there with them. I thought of signing a waiver and getting it done that way but the recruiter said that the first exam determined what direction my future in the Army would go. It was something I had to live with.
Before Suzette and I left the restaurant we made another date to meet the next evening. I really wanted to spend the whole day with her but I had a carburetor torn down at the station that I had to get back on Terry Hill’s car. He was a friend that I had met in high school and he only trusted me to work on his car. He dabbled in racing at the drag strip and sometimes on the highway as well. I had to keep his machine running at it’s best, and I could do that. I had been working from 7:30 AM until around 9:00 PM but that was about to come to an end. My dream was to own my own garage and I figured the only way to do it was to work every minute I could but now I wanted something more than work. It was my dream and I wasn’t gonna let anything interfere with it.
