i need some advice

Published Jul. 23, 2008

I don't mean to bring anyone down this morning, but I'm looking for some advice. Our cat is on her deathbed.  She's 17 or 18 years old (our vet gave her to my wife 15 years ago).  For the past few days she hasn't moved much.  Yesterday my wife found her in the closet covered in feces. Last night I found her sitting on the side of the house after the rain.  (We have pet doors that allow the animals to go outside. The dogs are restrained by the fence.  The cats fit through the slats.)  Since I brought her in, she's laid in her catbox.  (Don't worry, it's clean!)  She hasn't moved.  This morning she's breathing, but not moving.  Her eyes are open, but I'm not sure she's seeing anything.  She doesn't appear to be in pain.  My question is: Do I take her to the vet to end it, or allow nature to take it's course?

It is a very hard decision, and it's very hard to know if a cat is in pain - per the vets and shelters. Many vets do not charge to put your baby to sleep, especially if you have been going there for a while. Do what is in your heart, but don't let her suffer. If she's sitting in the rain, covered in feces, not moving - her quality of life is gone. Ours died in our arms at 18 years old at home and it was the hardest thing ever! If we had known, she would have been put to sleep peacefully without letting her linger.

If she has lost her ability to control her bowels and such then it is time to take her in and let her go. You have to look at it like a gift, she gave you years of companionship and happiness and now it is time to return the favor and let her go to her happiness...there are friends waiting for her at the bridge, she will not be alone.

My field ...

This is, as I advise everyone, a personal decision which must be made solely on the basis of what is best for the animal. It's difficult to let go of a beloved pet, but you can not allow that desire to hold on to the animal to put you in a position where her quality of life is suffering.

Consider the quality of life that your cat has now, and make the most humane decision you can with regard to what helps her not to suffer any longer than absolutely necessary.

We have had to put several dogs to sleep because of cancer. It is not an easy decision to make, but you don't want them to suffer. We were able to stay with the dogs and it is like they go to sleep.By the way, for those that have kennels, ours had wooden floors with treated plywood. This can cause cancer, but when we put it in, there were no studies showing that and we had no idea.It was only after losing several dogs that we found that out.Needless to say, that wood was change quickly!

Your cat said "Thank you?"

Wow, I wouldn't have euthanized a talking cat. You could have taken him on the David Letterman show or had him on Animal Planet.

im sorry id let her die naturally at the vets. i had to put a cat of 10 yrs to sleep, my hubby had to take him cause i couldnt bare to. my husband was with him when he was put to sleep and said it was the most horrible thing but he got to feel his last breath cause he had his hand on him soothing him and in the end, our cat just looked at him like thank you

Yes, I was being sarcastic. Geez, folks. I wouldn't sincerely propose cooking a cat.

I say, take her to the vet and let him/her take care of things. We had to put our family dog down. She was very old and eaten up with cancer. She had stopped eating and drinking, and she had lost half her weight. It was time.

I think Steve is just trying to lighten the mood. I don't mind.

THAT'S an insult to neanderthals

Stevesteve, what are you, some kind of neanderthal?

Have some respect for the poor cat.

Duh.
