welfare weekend update
Published Jul. 5, 2008I'm gonna keep a semi-running commentary of the idiocy for this evening. So check back often. I have to admit, though, that it looks like tonight may be somewhat of a washout with the thunderstorms. However, the night is still young. And if you're not quite sure what Welfare Weekend is, then see the original blog. By the way, I'm not gonna bother with routine stuff like domestic arguments (unless they shoot each other,) small fights and disturbances, minor vehicle accidents without serious injuries, or gunshots-heard calls especially tonight since most people can't figure out the difference between gun fire and fireworks.
11:45 pm: First shooting of the evening. Gunshot to the groin. It sounded promising, but it turned out to be a bit of a false alarm. It was just some 21 year old idiot who accidently shot himself in the nuts
12:49 am: Stabbing called out on 3800 block of Brentwood Road. Also a second call at 3800 Bonneville Court. Dispatch is not sure if this is the same call that somehow the language line got messed up. Nope. Definitely Bonneville Court. EMS and police on scene. Victim non-
English speaking male with slashed wrist as the result of a fight.
1:32 am: Big fight on Skycrest at Raleigh Blvd. This is really boring. Why did it have to rain?
2:26 am: First code blue of the night. Someone at the corner of Ashe Avenue and Western Blvd has apparently assumed room temperature. Natural death? Hit and run pedestrian? Murder? Only time will tell... Followup -- false alarm. Code Blue was cancelled by EMS. That sometimes happens when a drunk passes out from so much alcohol that there are little signs of life, especially in the dark and outside. So the waiting continues.
2:32 am: Armed robbery from the business at the Day's Inn on Glenwood Avenue. Initial description is a young black male armed with a gun who fled on foot. Stole money from register
2:49 am: Another Code Blue call, this one a person in a car at Thorton and Capital Blvd. Real or not? We'll wait again... Followup -- Yet another false alarm Just some guy in his car having a seizure.
2:50 am: Single car auto accident at Barwell Road and Holiday Drive. Car overturned and driver still inside. Hit a tree as well. EMS just arrived and he is alive but unconscious. Fire responding to extract from vehicle. Followup at 3:20 am -- EMS to WakeMed indicates patient unconsious and only semi-responsive to pain stimulus. Head injury and possible injury to right chest. EMS indicated that passenger compartment of car was pretty much totaled.
2:57 am: Strong arm robbery on Deep Hollow Drive. No suspect description
3:11 am: Transformer fire on Hailey Drive off of Athens Drive. OK, it's boring, but it is the first actual fire call tonight. I heard that one blow; it's only about a mile away.
3:22 am: Single vehicle accident, overturned and into a tree at Capital and the Beltline. Fire and EMS on scene at 3:26 after having a problem for about two minutes trying to find the vehicle; it's way into the treeline. Two subjects in vehicle. Fire indicates they are conscious and talking.
3:35 am: Got to run for about ten minutes to take out the garbage and bring it to the dumpster. It's getting rank and Val is starting to get that look on her face that says, "take out this garbage now." Let's hope nothing big happens. Be right back.
3:54 am: Yet another Code Blue call, this one goes out as a fall with subject unconscious on Trillium Circle. EMS call goes out as cardiac and unresponsive. Fire arrived at 4:03 am and EMS at 4:07 am. Confirmed Code Blue. That's way too long. I'm wondering if it is not now time to open up another fire or EMS station to serve the area on the west side of Lake Johnson. That area has grown dramatically and Engine 8 on Western and EMS 8 on Varsity are still the closest to it. And they are simply too far away.
4:40 am: Well, that's about all for me tonight It was very boring this evening. Perhaps tomorrow will be more exciting.

Did anyone see on the news, about a store being crowded at midnight when funds were deposited? The young man said he wasn't too proud to beg and was about to ask the reporter for some coins (I think that is how he phrased it) Of course, they were dressed in new clothes, had the nails and hair done.
