speed racer - reviewed
Published Jun. 2, 2008Well, we finally went to see Speed Racer over the weekend. First, let me say that I was not really into the cartoon as a kid, although my husband was, so I will try to include his perspective as well.
Ok first off, we saw it in Imax at the Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh… It was more expensive than a regular movie, but it was pretty cool to watch it on such a big screen. That being said, and in my opinion, was the best part of the movie. I’ll say this, my DH thought it was very good and really enjoyed himself. My 6 (almost 7) year-old daughter (who has a couple of Speed Racer cars and drives them around the house constantly – yes she is a tom-boy) started asking about 30 minutes into this 2 hour movie if it was almost over. In this case I think I have to side with my daughter.
While the special effects were kind of cool, I have seen other computer generated movies that were much more realistic looking. (Although my husband claims the cartoon was “campy” so this fit.) I didn’t really think of the movie as “campy” just not very good.
The acting was marginal, only the chimp kept my daughter entertained. The effects were visually stimulating, almost too much at some points. The race sequences were so fast at times that it was hard for me to follow let alone a child. The plot was a bit too convoluted for the kids to grasp (we asked my daughter some questions after the movie and it was obvious she was completely lost during most of the movie, and she is a pretty smart kid – even if I do say so myself.) From a look around the theater and seeing the other kids leaving, I would say my daughter was not alone.
Overall impression: IF you are going to see this movie, wait until it goes to the “cheap” theater to see it on the big screen; otherwise don’t waste your money.
Today I hope to see the latest installment of Indiana Jones, I’ll keep you posted.
