the funk brothers
Published May. 15, 2008I caught this movie the other night for the first time.
Truly amazing story about this group of muscians.
Together, the Funk Brothers were on more #1 hits than the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys COMBINED!
I would highly recommend this to any serious music fans out there.
Has anyone else seen this movie and just thought....WOW!

charles, great call on Buena Vista. I caught that one in the last year or so and I was also blown away at the talent shown there.
Music movies are always at the top of favorites list. So many great one's out there, but this one really blew my mind and seemed worthy of the 1st blog.

It's the soul within the soul. These guys loved what they did and had a great time doing it.
In the documentary they never really complain about what they were paid but whatever it was could not have been enough.
Truly a great story - Thanks for blogging about it.

Eddie: People moving out, people moving in. Why, because of the color of their skin. Run, run, run but you sure can't hide. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Vote for me and I'll set you free. Rap on, brother, rap on. Dennis: Well, the only person talking about love thy brother is the...(preacher.) And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the...(teacher.) Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration, Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation. Ball of confusion. Oh yeah, that's what the world is today. Woo, hey, hey.
Paul: The sale of pills are at an all time high. Young folks walking round with their heads in the sky. The cities ablaze in the summer time. And oh, the beat goes on.

Those dudes could play! I would have given anything to be up on that stage with them at the concert at the end of the movie, and I actually recorded the songs off of it onto my IPOD so we could listen to them going down the road.
You're right -- it was a WOW movie.
Another one that's really great if you haven't seen it is 'Buena Vista Social Club.' It's the story of the old Cuban musicians that Ry Cooder got back together and recorded and album with and then toured with. There's a scene where two awesome musicians, both in their 80's are walking down a street near Times Square. One of them says to the other, "I always dreamed of this place. I never thought I would see it" and the other guy says something like "Me either." Powerful, powerful stuff.
