movie review: the last king of scotland

Published Mar. 2, 2008

The last 15 minutes of this movie were chilling. I found myself with my hand covering my mouth and I had no idea how long it had been there once I realized it.

You do NOT have to be a history buff to enjoy this movie, and if you're no fan of actor Forrest Whittaker, you will certainly appreciate his talents and understand why he won an Oscar for his performance in this movie.

It's really interesting to see Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, through the eyes of his personal doctor (actor, James McAvoy) who did not see him as the monster most believed him to be, until is was painstakingly clear.

I won't go into all of the details but along with massive genocide and corruptness, the movie also squeezes in a love triangle, bribery and it also makes you take a look at your own beliefs and ability to miss what's sitting right in front of you.

It's rather long, so you may have to split it into two sittings if you can't tolerate movies that are longer than two hours. But, the movie is so well-done you actually find yourself  somewhat understanding Amin and may even feel a quick fleeting feeling of empathy for him, which is hard to believe, I know.

So if you're looking for a movie that moves and sometimes feels like a thriller, this is it. I think it'll be worth your time and you'll be glad you watched.

amen yankee. one need look no further than the aftermath of our election in 2000 and kenya's recent election and be able to see the difference between living in a CIVILIZED society as opposed to living in a perpetual third world country and continent. thats ok africa..just keep on blaming wh!tey for why your continent is stuck in the 1500's. and yeah, that idi amin was a reeeeealllllyyy sympathetic character...more like pathetic instead of sympathetic.

It was a good movie! Just another reminder to be grateful for the success of our continued democracy! Say what you will about America, but we have the longest peaceful transition of power than any other nation!

So this isn't like a remake of "Guess who's coming to dinner"? ;)

Would not like to be in his employ.

What are you doing in here on a Sunday morning Angela. Weekend duty? IS Chris Hansen there with you? If so, it makes a lot of what's happened durinng the night more understandable. If so, pleae delete this so it doesn't mess up the op. :)

Oh yes, this is an excellent movie.

I love Forrest Whitaker too...he is really talented. Tango my mom is sooo like that, especially at the theater..I nudge her all the time and say did you see that? She has to watch a movie 5 times to see the whole thing.

I like Forrest Whittaker, but haven't seen this yet. It's been out a while I think, Jack.{hey!}

I fell asleep during 310 to Yuma, but my boys told me it was worth buying. I get comfortable on the couch and my eyes automatically shut.........

Is it out on DVD yet, or only at the theatre. Thanks. I saw 310 to Yuma last week, was not expecting alot, but it was excellent. You don't have to be a fan of Westerns to like it.
